Why dengue in Europe could spell disaster for the rest of the world

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:05:54 GMT

In the early morning of the last day of August, Parisians experienced for the first time a practice normally confined to tropical regions — authorities fumigating the city against the tiger mosquito. The event was a tangible confirmation of what public health stats already showed: Dengue, the deadly mosquito-borne disease, had well and truly arrived in Europe. In 2022, Europe saw more cases of locally acquired dengue than in the whole of the previous decade. The rise marks both a public health threat and a corresponding market opportunity for dengue vaccines and treatments; news that should spur the pharma industry to boost investment into the neglected disease. On the face of it, this shift would appear to benefit not only countries like France but also nations like Bangladesh and the Philippines that have long battled dengue. But that assumption could be fatally flawed, experts told POLITICO. People working in the field say the rise of dengue in the West could, in fa...

Few showers today, sun returns this weekend

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:05:54 GMT

Good morning! A few showers will be here throughout the day, and it’ll feel cooler. We’re starting off in the 50s, and a lot of clouds will keep temperatures in the low 60s this afternoon. Rain is still here tomorrow, mainly for areas south. Then we’ll have improving conditions the rest of the weekend. Here’s our weather setup. A stream of moisture is getting pulled north. An area of low pressure will strengthen to our south as it interacts with a low moving in from the west. This low pressure will be slow to move out of here and continue to promote showers into tomorrow.Keep the rain gear nearby! Showers favor the west this morning into midday. A few showers develop inland later on. Heavy rain and flash flooding concerns are elevated for western Connecticut into the New York Metro. Overnight temperatures fall into the 50s. Shower chances increase for our region. Rain favors the first half of the day tomorrow. It’ll be steadiest the farther south you are...

As Kyle Hendricks prepares for a pivotal start tonight, weak contact is the basis of his success for the Chicago Cubs

The day before Kyle Hendricks’ final regular-season start, the Chicago Cubs’ veteran tried to recall the last time he took the mound for such a pivotal game so late into the 162-game schedule.Hendricks figures it came in September 2019 when the Cubs tried to lock down a playoff spot, going from 14 games over .500 and in the final wild-card position with two weeks to go to missing the postseason thanks to a stretch of losing nine consecutive games. After a disastrous three-game sweep in Atlanta, the Cubs turn to Hendricks with their postseason hopes on life support Friday in Milwaukee, where they close out their regular-season slate.“This is what you play for,” Hendricks told the Tribune on Thursday. “You want to be winning and you’re in this game for one reason, and it’s to win. And so to have a group like this where you’re so close and to be able to win with them makes it even more special. To be in it now, we’re focused...

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — The small southern African nation of Eswatini was holding elections Friday to decide part of the makeup of its parliament, even as its extremely wealthy king retains absolute power, political parties are banned and elected representatives can merely advise a monarch whose family has reigned supreme for 55 years.Eswatini, wedged between South Africa and Mozambique, is the last absolute monarchy in Africa and one of the few remaining in the world. King Mswati III, 55, has been the monarch since 1986, when he became ruler days after his 18th birthday. His father was king for 82 years before him, although Eswatini only gained independence from Britain in 1968.It was formerly known as Swaziland.Candidates for the house of assembly — the lower house — and the senate — the upper house — cannot belong to political parties, which were banned in 1973, and are nominated at a local level before they face a popular vote.Mswati III appoints a minority of the house o...

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Russia appears to have avoided a full ban from next year’s Paralympics in Paris after the International Paralympic Committee’s members voted Friday against suspending the country’s membership. The IPC wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that members voted 74-65 against a motion to fully suspend Russia “for breaches of its constitutional membership obligations.” Thirteen more members abstained.Another vote is scheduled later Friday on whether to “partially suspend” Russia. GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — Europe gave the Americans a rude welcome and a harsh reminder why it has been 30 years since they last won the Ryder Cup away from home, sweeping the opening session for the first time before a delirious crowd at Marco Simone. So thorough was this beating Friday morning that no match reached the 18th hole.Jon Rahm holed a 30-foot putt from off the second green and hit a tee shot that banged off the bottom of the pin at the par-3 seventh. Viktor Hovland got his side going early, chipping off the tight grass of the fringe, over a ridge and into the cup on the opening hole.Rory McIlroy delivered the final dagger, a tee shot to 2 feet on the par-3 17th hole as he and Tommy Fleetwood — “Fleetwood Mac” for this Ryder Cup — handed Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele their first loss in foursomes.European captain Luke Donald looked like a genius by leading off with foursomes, the more difficult format of alternate shot.
